Dr. Herbert V.R.P. Jones, Administrative Assistant to Composer

Dr. Herbert V.R.P. Jones, Founder/Director, is one of the nation's foremost figures in choral conducting and pedagogy and an expert in the intersection between theology and musical expression. A Southern transplant to Pennsylvania, Dr. Jones has cultivated a broad-based, multifaceted career as a choral conductor, educator, operatic and oratorio bass, liturgical dancer, orator and minister, teaching and performing across the United States and Europe.

Dr. Jones has taught in the Public Schools of Mississippi (grades 6-12), the Private High School sector (The Piney Woods School, Mississippi, The Neighborhood Academy-Pittsburgh) and colleges and universities in North Dakota, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi, respectively.
Dr. Jones is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Inc., Tau Beta Sigma, Inc., and the National Sacred Dance Guild. He has published articles in the Mississippi ACDA/Mississippi Music Teachers Journal, the Academic Division of GMWA, the Milestone Christian Bookstore Newsletter, and Black Research Journal, to name a few.


Dr. Jones is listed in: “Who's Who Among American Teachers” (dual listing); “Who’s Who Global” (2014); “Distinguished Church Musicians In America”, “Outstanding Personalities of America”, “Marquise International Who's Who”, Residential Scholars [the first and only African American] Choral Scholar, (University of Mississippi); “Outstanding African-American Choral Directors in America”; “50 Men of Excellence” (2011, selected by the New Pittsburgh Courier), one of 5 men selected as “Men of Distinction” (2013) recognized by the Rachel Randall Education Ministry of the Pentecostal Temple Church PGH, Pittsburgh, PA., and several others.
Dr. Jones is considered a leading authority on the music of Moses George Hogan. His Doctoral Dissertation, “THE AFRICAN AMERICAN SPIRITUAL AND GOSPEL SONG: THE MUSICAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF MOSES GEORGE HOGAN, COMPOSER AND ARRANGER”, is the only definitive work on the life, music, compositional style of the composer.


Dr. Jones has performed in Operas, Musicals, Theater, and on the Dance stages of America and abroad. In the dance world, he has studied and performed Classical Ballet, Modern Dance, Liturgical (Sacred Dance) and Mime. He is a former student of the “Graham Technique” (dance technique of the Late Martha Graham), and while in high school, a member of the Dunbar Drama & Dance Guild and the “Alvin Ailey Dance Theater of Harlem” Apprenticeship Program. He has choreographed for Ballet Companies and Dance Programs across the United States; the most recent being The North Dakota Ballet Company. Dr. Jones choreographed a Tribute to Alvin Ailey via the signature dance work, ‘Revelations.” He is the Founder of the former PWS Dance Alloy of The Piney Woods School, Mississippi.
An Ordained Minister of Music, Dr. Jones is Executive Assistant, Academic Division, of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Inc. (GMWA), and sits on the Boards of Hymns For Him, Inc, (Chairman, Winston-Salem, NC), Professionals for Christ, Inc. (Birmingham, AL), RAISE Academy (Columbus, OH), the Center For Urban Biblical Ministry (Vice President), Madame Mary Cardwell Branch,(Vice President), National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc, (NANM), and is a retired Music Department faculty member of Community College of Allegheny County Department of Music, Allegheny Campus.


Dr. Jones currently serves as Minister of Music, Bethany Baptist Church, and Humanities/Music/Fine ARTS Area Head, Center For Urban Biblical Ministry (CUBM - Geneva College). He continues to maintain an active schedule conducting seminars and workshops, guest conducting, and adjudicating choral festivals and competitions.

Mr Zachary Lavender, Director of Special Resources

Born in Monroe, Louisiana, and after migrating to Chicago, Illinois, Zachary began his musical journey at the tender age of ten. Zachary’s training was provided by some of Chicago’s finest in the disciplines of choral, church, and vocal music. He has had extensive training in voice pedagogy at Roosevelt University’s Chicago Musical College under the guidance of Robert Long and Ruth Ann Bishop.
Currently, Zachary is the President and CEO of Sanctuary of Refuge, founded in 2018. This organization and support ministry works with individuals who desire to be set free of homosexuality and live according to God’s holy Word. As a self-publisher, Zachary has leveraged his work across the country into music departments of various sizes and chorus makeup. He is also the author of “Victim of Circumstance,” published in June 2018, and his latest publication, “In 5 Days which describes his journey of dialysis and the path to his kidney transplantation.
Throughout his year tenure as a church musician, Zachary built a reputation for developing singers and musicians that perfect the church’s music ministry. He is passionate about the needs and objectives of church music and the future generation of singers and musicians. He specializes in bringing the talent and gift of musicians to the forefront and allowing them to minister at their fullest capacity.

As evidence of my commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and spiritual growth, I have previously authored several works that have been gleaned within the religious community. These include, “Victim of Circumstance – Help, Hope, and Healing from the Struggle.” “In 5 Days – Faith and Grace on Display,” and “A Restless Evil – Dental Danger.”

Mrs Alene Ramsey, Operations Officer

Alene worked as a former Registered Medical Technologist, a former teacher for Job Corps, a former licensed Real Salesman, and a former Associate Director for the Urban League of Nebraska. She retired after 38 years as Administrative Services Director for the Council of Government in the Omaha-Council Bluffs Area. While there she was responsible for development, administration and maintenance of agency personnel functions and administrative policies and procedures. She administered the agency insurance program and was responsible for maintaining the fiscal financial management system. Alene served as agency contracting officer and assured compliance of agency contracts with state, federal and local laws and regulations. She assisted the Director in preparation of the budget and procured and served as staff support for the annual audit. Alene managed an agency/DHUD student work-study program and was responsible for and coordinated agency purchases, She also developed and coordinated an area law enforcement recruitment and testing program and was staff support for the Federal Project Review Committee. She worked with and reported to area elected officials i.e. (Mayors, City Council members, County Board members etc.).

Mrs Velma Larry, Administrative Assistant

Mrs Velma Ervin Larry, a retired public school music teacher, is also recently retired as Director of Music Ministry at her home church, Saint Paul Church of Sacramento.  A graduate of Prairie View A&M University, she holds a Masters of Music Education Degree from University of North Texas, at Denton.  Velma now enjoys using her energy with the Sacramento Ebony Chorale whose mission is to reignite an interest in the Negro Spirituals thorough expository performances, and to hold an annual performing arts workshop for youth, honing their critical thinking skills while utilizing these precious gems in engaging learning activities.

Mrs Glenette Robinson, Recording Secretary

I am Glenette Robinson, the secretary for the Requiem project.  I am from Omaha, Nebraska.  I am a retired Certified Medical Assistant, with a Bachelor of Science degree in HealthCare Administration, from Bellevue, Nebraska.
My duties as recording secretary include maintaining and keeping track of donations and contributions received from patrons.  In addition, filing, managing, organizing, and updating important records are included.  Coordination between staff administrators and participants is a goal that we strive to accomplish daily. As one who believes that God can move mountains and provide wisdom for every aspect of life including business, I stand with the Pray Leaders.  I trust God and know His Word is true!
